Celebrating Decades of Dedication: This Year’s Alice W. Chandler Staff Service Recognition Honorees
A tenure of over 40 years at the University of Chicago is a milestone that speaks to both an individual’s commitment to the University and the lasting presence they leave on this campus. The individuals who have been at UChicago for over 40 years are the personalities that shape our community and identity. Rigorous, intellectual, and driven, this year’s Alice W. Chandler Staff Service Recognition honorees remind us that such long-term commitment is more than just a career.
Denise M. Jorgens, whose 40-year journey began as a graduate student in Middle Eastern Studies and evolved into her current role as Director of International House of Chicago, connects UChicago with the world. Loretta M. Lanfear has spent four decades in the Bursar’s Office, adapting through system upgrades and shifting roles, but always grounded by the support of her colleagues. “The work is challenging and keeps me on my toes. I'm still always learning, but I enjoy the people I work with tremendously; that’s what keeps me here.” She reflects. Amelia Kuhar has worked across departments from Environmental Services to Gastroenterology, where she now supports five physicians and finds purpose in helping patients navigate their care.
From overseeing international student life to managing financial operations, from supporting physicians to mentoring generations of scholars, each of these honorees has left a mark on the University’s history. Their stories are a reminder that UChicago’s greatest strength lies in the people who have chosen, year after year, to make this community their home.
